I was hoping to blog about this before the actual event happened but I was in a mad pack getting ready for my holiday/vacation and have only just settled in now. My apologies to Laura as I would have loved to have made it along and a big thank you for actually making something this cool with my music. Really appreciate it. Below is the press release for the event.

‘Dig’ is an interactive sound and visual experience, which encourages playful immersion in music. In the form of a tangible media installation, it allows the discovery of objects hidden within a unique digging interface, and engages participants through interaction with audio and visuals in real-time. The setup features a sandpit-like area filled with rubber granules (kindly supplied by Reclaim Industries), which cover specially designed fixed objects. The visuals are displayed above the pit and, as the participant begins to dig, they start to discover the objects. Noticable audible sounds (heard through concealed speakers), as well as visual changes occur as they play their way through the experience. Although Dig allows opportunity for completion, the objective is not to play to win, but rather play to play.

The song the project is based around is ‘Enough to Make You Smile’ by Brisbane electronica artist Hunz. Hunz’s music is comprised of many tracks layered together to create diverse and unique rhythms and melodies. Ultimately, Dig seeks to immerse anyone who likes to play and discover.

Also check out Laura’s site here. She has some wonderful work that is worthy of your eyes.

Mr Mark Dollin, the guy that mixed my last album, has done a very awesome remix of the song “Soon, Soon”. My favorite type of remixes are ones that take the existing work and build on it to take it out of it’s comfort zone. You can hear wonderful echo’s of the original song through it. Great work MMD!

As you all know I really wanted to make sure everything was done in renoise for the album “thoughts that move”. I’ve been in love with tracking ever since I had my faithful Amiga and when I played with renoise I knew it was everything I hoped a tracker would become. During the whole process I talked with the renoise dev team to see if they could help host my .xnrs files to which they said they will but I never thought they might include a track in their program for all to hear when they purchase it. So a big Thank you so much renoise dev.

Also they have 3 of my tracks playing from their main page so check that out here and click on the player on the right.

Over the next few days I’ll draw your attention to some amazing posts that have happened since releasing the album, eeeeee. A big “thank you” to who the bloody hell are they.

Hunz is an electronic musician from Brisbane who recently recorded his second album in unusual circumstances – he took part in the RPM Challenge that asked over 2200 international artists to write, record, perform and produce an entire album during the month of February 2009. The fruits of that challenge have recently been made available to download for free and there’s some killer tracks on there. My favourite is ‘Soon, Soon,’ which combines industrial-inspired beats with a soaring falsetto reminiscent of Radiohead’s ‘Nude’ and harmonies that recall parts of Gotye’s last effort. Like Gotye, Hunz releases music under a one-word psuedonym (crazy, huh?) and combines elements of schizophrenic production with earnest singer-songwriter tendancies. I prefer the songs where the former wins over and enjoy the way his sweet, high voice rubs against the harsher elements of the arrangement but for those who prefer their music less glitchy and full of ‘beeps’ there’s some fairly straight-up compositions.

‘Soon, Soon’ is rad – especially impressive given the contracted gestation period. Kudos to Hunz.

Song3 Version4
Mixing Comments [Mr Mark Dollin]

I think I found my new favourite RPM song! What bliss and pain all rolled together! Listening through a few times to get a sense of all the bits. I’ll be approaching the mix using the same method as all the previous mixes. Low, to high, to vocals, to the whole mix. Oddies follow:

Fixing some buggy clicks in the kick drum – still gritty but not so clicky.

Lifiting the tone of all the drums, time for some punch!

Now to the synths, fixing spatialities and tones to make sure there’s nothing left but detailed high magic.

Bass is dissappearing into the kick in places so I’m adding a wide chorus to let it speak it more above the kick.

Now to sample cleaning! Clean clean clean…

Sending all the vocals to a group to get a nice shape to the sound. Adjusting the tone of each vocal sound to get it all interlock.

Now adding everything back with the vocals. Making more tweaks to vocal placements to emphasise the drama of the parts.

Putting a lengthend fade at the end.

Checking on headphones. Fine adjustments here and there.

It’s getting late so it would be wise to have a final check with fresh ears early tomorrow.

Earling morning session. Fixing some more vocal settings, getting everything flowing and balanced.

Time to check on the big speakers loud! More fine adjusting on vocals.

Back to the main speakers for one last check. Ok done!
