#Rpm Day14 Song2 V4

It was perfect weather day! The only hitch was getting up at 6am to go to the markets but that’s ok. I started around 12pm, had 3 breaks Lunch, ear break and some kinda dinner desert thing which possibly took 2hrs of my time. I don’t know what it is though, it was such a hard song to make happen. I could hear the melodies bubbling underneath the surface but they wouldn’t come out. I also got stuck in this TRANCE sound and I was just so over it at that point. No one likes the 90′s yet it’s all 80′s people :P It does hug trance a little bit here and there but I’m hoping I pushed it a little .. huh? anyone?.

Hunz Song02 Version04

Verse
F.Y.I. Yeah I know what we do
you’ve got to listen to the past
get this lump off our backs
It’s like a trench dug deeply
with a bad attitude
placed our fingers in our ears
watching lips turn blue

Chorus
Oooo ooo

Verse
The sun comes out

and the shadows are dark
Contemplate all you want

but we’re more like sharks
We circle back again

to the start of the start
and to watch from the side

is just stupid art.

Chorus
It’s so light
and we’re waiting for
we’re alive
what are we waiting for?

  • Fixing the chorus build up to go somewhere
  • Splitting the Apreggiating Synth into 2 passes so I can Feedback the high end only.
  • Problems with it delaying on the 6th and 8th so I had to pan a bit more.
  • Added synth that links in from the verse
  • Playing with the chorus more
  • Found more unique and simpler vocal lines
  • working on lyrics
  • song is about the worlds apathy
  • Lunch time
  • Came back started arrangement work
  • Created just some nice grooves around the drum line
  • Needs some shakers people.
  • Working out how to approach the chorus type thing
  • it’s too trancey and it is making me cry (not good tears either)
  • I changed the bass movement a little bit
  • Need an ear break.
  • Coming back to listen to it again. I’m enjoying it.
  • Will leave it for now and complete it later.
  • I don’t think I’ll go back to the verse, I’ll just bleed the ending out a lot.

Again, I need a name people. All I can come up with is “Pigs on Wheels” and we all know, that although that’s possibly the BEST song names eva!!, this song is more about sharks and um, Apathy .. Errr, ok, so I’m in a funny mood. Night.

#Rpm Day13 Song9 V1

Wow. What a change in pace. It’s my favorite thing. It’s raining, and it’s cold. I have had a rough week at work; there are some major deadlines due over the next few days, and things are just going wrong. It really just nags at you when you are writing, but I decided to not care tonight and just write. I started with something I love doing so it would encourage me to enjoy and forget. I ended up with something so strange that it’s growing on me. The verse part is a bit, bleh, but the chorus is so strange that I’m going to work with it to see what I can squeeze out of it till the end.

Hunz Song9 V1

  • Looking to tie something from my other album onto this
  • Loaded up the Lounge Lizards Rhodes Vsti
  • Created a nice loop
  • Rendering it to samples for chop-up love
  • I love creating drums from the chopped up instruments.
  • Created basic Kick/Snare Distort
  • Just started hearing melodies and got caught on the ride
  • Something strange came out, and I like it.. but only the chorus, not too happy with the verse
  • it’s nothing like creating a bridge from the last album .. waaa T_T
  • Anyways, I’ll post it.

I have some extra help coming my way too. I have found someone that is going to help me mix down some tracks, which I’ll talk about tomorrow. He is also going to send through his process of mixing. I’ve also found someone to master my tracks on the final day (28th). Very excited and can’t wait to see how this all pans out

#Rpm Day12 Song8 V4

I’m going back to work on this song until I get some sleep, but I’m just enjoying where this Song8 took me. If you listen back you’ll hear that start, and then listen to yesterday and then today. It’s like chalk and cheese (i think that’s the lamest saying but ‘meh who I am to change things .. lol). The chorus is a bit, err, jazzish and um. So hard to describe. I think I tread this line of being really commercial, and it scares me. I really just want to push electronic music, not sound like some pop sensation.

There is no list today. I just wrote and got lost in the music, and I enjoy that the most when it’s teaching me things, and I’m tapping out beats and quickly adding chns and adding new percussion here and there. So enjoy.

#Rpm Day11 Song8 V3

It’s been really muggy and hot here in brisbane. When I get home the heat in the house takes a few hours to go away. I don’t like summer at all, it’s so blerg. I created a strong beat build up that may or may not link into Song8 v1. I may ditch that movement as I find it a little cliche, sorry if you like it. Not much tonight, just a beat with bass. I can’t wait to hear this fresh later on and hear a really great melody over the top of it. I think I’ll save it and wait till I forget it.

Hunz Song8 V3

  • Working on sketch 08
  • Want to see if it’s going to go somewhere
  • sound card crashed
  • 3 reboots and then I changed Fire wire ports
  • Seems to be ok, will check the other port later.
  • Getting feedback from the beat
  • Adding a tonne of Scream Filter passes in it.
  • Just added more and more layers of beats
  • Changed the bass to trigger repetitive mood out
  • Like it but can’t seem to find a good vocal line
  • will approach this later.
  • Close file.

I feeling a bit over it tonight but I know that’s the heat. Work has been so full on that it just zaps the passion out of you when you get home but I’ll try to inject that frustration into melodies instead.

#Rpm Day9 Song8 V1

I almost just did nothing tonight. I feel blah about this tune. Purely because i wrote it for the sake of it, and it just highlights my style and the band cliche’s within it. I could be WAY off the mark but ‘eh. Did I mention it’s incredibly hot tonight, and I hate the heat. My perfect day is rainy but being indoors, and that coolness greets you. You taunt me so!!

Hunz Song8 V1

  • Created an instrument
  • I drew in the sine wave (I love renoise for this feature .. F11 (use 32bit) and then Ctrl+Shift+D and draw in the sample editor
  • I tweaked it in the Instrument editor. Using Pans/Volume and some Automation, it made me feel like I was listening to Plaid (I love that band)
  • Started playing in notes and put the click track on and something stuck out
  • I REALLY want to do a sliding bass song .. like a Fret less but crazy
  • My Microphone was setup, so I started singing melodies I was hearing. I like High parts that switch to low and then wobble around the breaking point (think Zombie by The Cranberries here people)
  • I’m feeling indifferent but I needed to get something out tonight.

Time for me to sleep. I have a 6am start in the morning, so FEAR my state in the morning. Thanks for all your wonderful words for the 1st song too.

#Rpm Day8 Song1 V5

Should have seen this one coming but I’m an animator so I used the codes we use for saving our files. I’ve now decided to change them around. So I’ll have the day we are up too what song I’m working on (until it gets a name) and what version I’m up too. I hope that makes sense.

After going to mr.maps cd launch last night I’ve been feeling that wind of music underneath me where everything and anything is possible. Please if you haven’t checked them out, do. It was an amazing experience that I would repeat again tonight if he was doing another show. So I present to you my 1st completed tune. I need names people and I’m not precious about these things so gimme something and I’ll tag it.

Hunz Song1 Version05

Verse
Well take my heart
and break it down, won’t you?
yeah, tear it apart
This broken heart. yes you!
and once that’s done
we’ll build it up. won’t we?
we’ll cram it full
of promises won. won’t we?

Chorus
and it’s a long road
It’s a long road

Verse
Let’s make a start
Let’s make a start to this
this cuts so deep
I need loves thread to stitch this
And when it’s done
we’ll have to run from here
the past has drawers
that store the oldest old ways

Chorus
and it’s a long road
It’s a long road too

Bridge
I dream of a day when it all feels truly clear
those clouds just disappeared as I’m watching them go
I dream of a day when it all feels truly clear
those clouds just disappeared as I’m watching them go

Chorus
and it’s a long road
It’s a long road too (I’m trying find it)

  • Created new drum roll end with bass matching for 2nd pattern in verse
  • Adding synth notes for the verse parts to expand later on and build up in the song.
  • I love cutting notes (using the F1 -> F4 in the volume chn) because it creates this fake guitar effect of muting the notes on the down/up strum
  • Refined the lead
  • Placed some bass movements to compliment
  • Started hearing different notes
  • Striped it back again to listen to better setups
  • Found something that flows
  • Heard vocal part – laying it down
  • going to change the bass to move more
  • Going into arrange mode.
  • I’m finding the grooves I want people to remember
  • The whole Mmmm .. Ahhhh vocal thing I really want people to hear
  • So I’m featuring it before I go into the verse and then turning it down.
  • Putting Light 2 note chords on each 1 hit to create a shell and more melody for the verse
  • Lunch/Breakfast break
  • Placed bass root notes underneath chorus part
  • It created something cliche but I liked it.
  • I started singing something over the top
  • Created a new part and am ditching the previously made one for now
  • Going back to the verse part and changing the octave of notes
  • It’s got some of that backbone that I love, means it creating a light atmosphere where the vocals can carrier the rest.
  • Writing lyrics
  • Recording verse lyrics still unsure about the melody for the chorus.
  • Arranging and pulling parts in and out.
  • Deciding on the 2nd verse to drop all the kit out and pump through a new bass/chord progression over the vocals
  • Will continue that for a broken chorus.
  • Didn’t think the broken chorus would work.
  • I’m so over the chorus, I think it’s lame.
  • I’ve changed the mid8 into the chorus.
  • My wife came in and listened to it.
  • She thinks I need food before deciding what to do.
  • Food.
  • Food helped! I have more of an idea.
  • I’m going to work on the old chorus now. Create layers and get the essence of it out.
  • Singing in counter parts and melodies
  • Constructing the outtro bridge
  • And am putting on a ending that I’ve never done before.
  • A chorus with no pull back into it. It just plays out.

So how do I feel about this song. I’m not loving the chorus. I find it too, um, upbeat or something or comical. Don’t know. I do know it’s catchy and I enjoyed it when I wrote it and then when I 1st heard it back. So I’m holding on to that. I like the feel of the overall song and I like how it’s paced. Highlights for me are the 2nd chorus with all the layers of vocals and then the break out from the drum beat into something that just lets go. Anyways, I’ll be moving into new stuff tomorrow night.

#Rpm Day7 Song7 v1

It’s amazing what can happen in a few moments. I heard a melody in my head. I played it in. I added the bass line. Added arpeggiating sequences (ever since my wife has been playing Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd I’ve been loving the downward type). I heard a vocal melody. I hummed it in. 10 mins past and I have a sketch to play with tomorrow.

#Rpm Day7 Song6 v3

So my ears are still ringing from the show last night, which was awesome, thanks for asking :P . Yeah, I forgot my ear plugs. My voice is a little rougher as well due to my live voice being a bit more pushed (still working on that). Special hello to everyone that managed to come, hope you had a wonderful night.

I picked up the Rpm06 Sketch and knew I wanted to take it some where. It had some new elements in it that I’ve never done before, one being the snare split with a one shot LFO trigger. I straighten the beat out more and made it less complicated so the bass could weave in and out of it creating some complexity. It’s important to me that people can hear each element and enjoy it even when everything is on UNLESS it’s intentional and you want to drown people in a sound mess. I also love dorky moments in song take the string line for example. I shifted it down an octave from is original sample tone and then Just ran it down in tones / semitones it is so .. errr .. dorky sounding but when it hits together I feel like it’s weaves through with intention.

Have a listen to where that beat went and I’m rather happy with it. Don’t know if this is a chorus or middle 8. It could be a verse but I think it’s too high and not a “the song has started” moment. I am up for something new though so maybe I should ditch that mentality OR I could let the song breath and do it’s own thing (which is always what I do, after thinking about it too much)

Hunz RPM06 03

  • Don’t really like the loop, Don’t like how it delays the snare. IT’s what I use to do and I need to move forward.
  • Constructing something different and listening to the sounds to see if works together.
  • I love lowering things, So I’ve lowered kick and the Snare
  • I straighten the loop out lowered more things and created some nice snare cascades.
  • Placed a simple hi hat in there
  • Found a bass line that was just pulsey
  • heard a melody for a synth line
  • slowed the track down too bpm125
  • Want the drums to follow the lead create more space.
  • Leaving kick and snare on with lead to create a beat.
  • Changed Bass to suit sounds more random but punches on melodies
  • Sped the track up to 138bpm
  • Not to happy with the kick going to mix a pure sound with it (later on)
  • Layered vocals through the mix
  • I’m happy with this sketch for now
  • doing a quick arrangement for your listening pleasure
  • Sketch over for the day

Have a really busy afternoon but a good one none the less. Going to picnic to say farewell to a friend of mine. Then later going to see mr.maps launch their cd. Should be an awesome night.

I’ll catch you guys tomorrow as I have a full day to work on something. Should I do something new? Or should I complete something old? Make some suggestions by leaving a comment.

#Rpm Day5 Song6 v1

I had to work back late today to finish up something. So I decided to have an earlier night. I have a show tomorrow so I thought I would do a run down of how I set up a beat (backbone). I use renoise so if you do, then this will be helpful(ish). It’s not a fantastic beat but it’s what I’ll call a skeleton. What I do next is listen to notes and freq’s with in the pattern I’ve created and see if synth/bass or vocal lines comes out of it. That might sound strange but if you listen hard enough (hopefully the mp3 conversion hasn’t killed it) you can hear the bass notes I put in on the last 4 (or is that 8) bar counts coming out of the kick pattern.

Tonight’s audio preview has only drums in it. And goes. Kick pattern, Kick + hats pattern, Kick + hats + snare pattern and then the bass notes I hear in the kick. I personally don’t like what the kick gave me as a melody so I’ll start playing with that later.

  • Bringing in a loop to just sketch a drum loop.
  • Find some old vinyl thing
  • Chopped up and pulled out 2 Kicks, 2 Snares and a Hihat
  • I personally like working with recorded loops they have have character in them e.g. Hisses, rooms ambient and crowd noises.
  • I love how you can extend samples (e.g. looping) and cut them off (e.g volume ramping) to create counter rhythms.
  • Working on the kick pattern 1st
  • Looped one of the kick and then pitch shifted it for snare hit with quick volume off
  • Pitch shifted it down a few notes so it hit 80hrz range.
  • Eq it pretty harshly pulled tones I didn’t want out
  • Pushed tones I did want in.
  • Adding Hats before Snare
  • Hat sample is very Clicky heavy so I’ll be using offset (900) command in renoise to cut into it at certain points.
  • I’ll also be looping it to create dorky open hats.
  • Pitched them up a little
  • Created something to counter hit the kick pattern
  • it creates some welcomed awkwardness.
  • Placed snare on 2 and 4 then 2 and 4.5 I love delaying snares.
  • Eqing Hi hats
  • Whistling Freq (4000hz range pulled down) added 4octave around 8000hz for crisp.
  • Soloing the Snare, listening.
  • It’s a yucky Snare that I’m going to attempt to thicken with Chorus and Eqing
  • Distortion Chorus added more Freq to split
  • Splitting Freqs to Sends
  • With the Low Freq I’m going to put a reverb on them very long and then Gate it quickly.
  • I’m going to use the LFO device to Env the Gainer Gain
  • I’m resetting the One Shot every time the snare triggers
  • So I can adjust the Gate Evelope on the LFO device
  • Sending both snare sends to a master they need to be compressed and sound unified more.
  • I’m Bus compressing them and this is how I use the compressor
  • I push the threshold right down to -50
  • I set the ratio to 5:1
  • Now because this is a snare I like it when some of it’s crack comes through.
  • I increase the attack until I hear the snare crack
  • This case it’s around 350.
  • So after 350ms the 5:1 ratio is going to kick in and compress the snare
  • the release is just after it’s compressed that threshold setting how quickly it’ll release it back into an uncompressed signal.
  • I’m moving the threshold up and the ratio to be less severe
  • and placed some makeup on it (no not lipstick :D )
  • Made some minor tweaks to get more range
  • If I place a snare in with out triggering the LFO in the Low send it creates and awesome crack.
  • Creating counter beats with this crack.
  • Panning Hats around.
  • Drawing in Bass sample.
  • Placed bass pattern in it’s just following the awkward.
  • That’s all for tonight.

I also want to add “I’m no expert”. I just like sound and try my best to bring it together. If technically I’ve done the wrong thing with compression then please let me know. I’m always in a state of learning. On listening through it again, I think the compression on the snare is a bit severe and I’ll fix that later.

If you are around (Brisbane, Australia) please drop into my show at the troubadour tomorrow night. It should be a freek’n great night. I’ll be on around 8:30ish. Which means that I will not be posting tomorrow.

#Rpm Day4 Song5 v2

So it wasn’t another easy night. It started off with me plugging in my usb synth keyboard, I normally just use the laptop keys to create music. I thought playing and singing would help, and then I could lay it all down. You know, do something different. I came up with this very neat chord progression, and then everything just fell apart after I placed it in renoise and tried to find a vocal melody over it. I tried to push it here and there, but nothing would work. I let it breathe and just wrote what came back, and this is the result.

Hunz RPM05 02

  • Wanting to write something a bit more epic sounding
  • Came up with a nice unresolved chord progression
  • The sample I drew in and made into an instrument is demanding more of the spotlight
  • New progress came with playing on the synth keyboard
  • Expanded this out
  • Happy with how it sounds
  • Pulled in various snare/hats/kicks I’ve collected
  • heard a very strong beat as the notes played through ..
  • been mixing in headphones
  • about to change over to speakers
  • Sounds ok
  • Placed everything together
  • it just sounds normal
  • tweaking things a bit
  • Scrapped movement completely
  • Twisted drum timing around (snare – Kick)
  • Trying to just make the 10pm Deadline
  • Mix is terrible but a concept is there not very happy with this one either

I am so exhausted. I almost took tonight off to rest up (after my 1am last night), but I just needed to reach the half way mark for the 1st phase of writing. I secretly want to complete 11 – 12 tunes and then select the 10 that will work together.. shhh. I also fear the fact that most of these songs lack some middle8 movements .. Hope you are enjoying the journey. It’s certainly different to churn songs out night after night. I usually only write when I feel like it, so I find myself trying to put myself in the mood to write. I have to shout out to my amazing wife too, Thank you! On another note, I kinda regret putting (with previews) in the title .. lulz
